Little Bluestem

Grasses have flowers, too! Now, late in the season, at the airport, in powerline cuts, and along the roadside, little bluestem is about to put out white, fuzzy spikes of tiny flowers from the purplish  sheaths that give it the bluish caste. It is called little in contrast to big bluestem, which can grow a couple of feet or so taller. Big bluestem is part of the tallgrass prairie found in places like May Prairie. Little bluestem is at the drier end of the prairie gradient.
