Overwintering Underwater

The brilliant cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis, blooms in midsummer to fall along stream sides and in other wet places. The basal rosettes of leaves that will give rise to those flowering stalks persist through the winter, often in the streams themselves, under flowing water at times. Here is a group  of rosettes in a stream crossed by the Perimeter Trail.
