And next …

leaves1… come the leaves! No wonder terminal buds of hickory trees  are so big — look what’s popping out of this one! I’m guessing these leaves with seven fuzzy new leaflets belong to pale (or sand) hickory, Carya pallida,  but time will tell. Tender young leaves of many plants droop and display a reddish color, characteristics that will protect the newly-developing tissues from bright sunlight that can damage them. It won’t be long, though, before the leaves have greened up and are standing out straight to absorb as many of the sun’s rays as they can.leaves2
