The Sorceress’s Plant

medeolaMedeola virginiana, or Indian cucumber-root, is blooming in our rich woods now. Named for the sorceress Medea, this plant was said to have multiple healing properties. One thing is for sure: the underground rhizome, or “root,” tastes just like a bite of fresh cucumber.  If you find a big patch, dig one up to taste for yourself!

  1. Nice! You should grow more them from seeds. It is listed as an endangered plant in Florida and in Illinois. It is kind unique! 🙂 It is pretty cold hardy, I would like to grow a few if I see them.
