Wonderful morning! It began with students at St. Andrews-Sewanee School being treated to a presentation by SAS alum, award-winning author Max Gladstone. Then they broke into groups of 15 or so to participate in workshops led by various writers. I led a workshop on “A Closer Look at the Land: Drawing and Writing in the Natural World.” We worked on putting together mini-nature journals, which I hope will serve as potential fodder for future nature essays, templates for future journaling, or interesting creations that the students will enjoy revisiting. Each person concentrated on one tree, looking at it close-up, zooming out for a landscape view, then in really close using hand lenses, drawing writing observations and responses/reflections on the experience. We read Mary Oliver’s poem “When I Am With Trees.” Did the students learn anything? I hope! Did I? You bet! Thanks, SAS, for a terrific experience!
