Farewell Summer

farewell summer

In our love-hate relationship with autumn (love the fall color; hate the end of the tomato season; love the clear days and the coming of sweater weather; hate to think how cold it really might get) this little plant definitely comes down on the “love” side! Common heart-leaved aster (Symphiotrichum cordifolius) packs its inflorescence with more little violet flower heads than you can count. Dubbed “Farewell Summer” by some locals, it  is blooming in fields and on roadsides now.
