Sewanee alum and Friends of the Herbarium member George Westerfield dropped in on our nature journaling group this week! An English major who studied here under the likes of Charles Harrison and Andrew Lytle, George had a career teaching high school English on the South Carolina coast. Now retired, he has gotten into horticulture in a big way. Gathering current and former high school students, fellow teachers, and community members, he set out fifteen years ago to transform the landscaping of the school where he was teaching. And they have succeeded — for the past four years, the school has been on the Hilton Head garden tour, along with several beautiful residential gardens. George doesn’t have to buy plants — landscapers and nurseries know he’s most willing to take perennials of all kinds (invasives excluded). Resorts that can’t allow their curb appeal to wane, give him plants that are past bloom. He also stays on the lookout for free cookies and lemonade, with which he repays his young helpers.
