Pretty purple pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.) is full of chemicals that make it poisonous to humans at this time of year. In the early spring the more adventurous of us make poke sallet out of the new green leaves. Later in the season, however, leaves, stems, and even these beautiful berries are too potent for us. We leave them for the raccoons, foxes, and other mammals who happily dine on them and spread the seeds wherever they ramble.
