Cumberland Azalea

azalea2 A hike in Fiery Gizzard brought an unexpected treat — the bright orange blossoms of Cumberland Azalea blooming trailside. many people mistake this plant for the better-known Flame Azalea, but this one blooms later, after the leaves have fully expanded.

azaleaCumberland Azalea has a fairly narrow range — it is limited to the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Yet  another of the beautiful plants of the South Cumberland Plateau! For the next several weeks, if you’re out in the woods and something bright catches your eye, look twice — it might be the Cumberland Azalea.
