This week, I got to accompany Prof John Gatta’s FYP (Finding Your Place) group on a hike to Sycamore Falls in Fiery Gizzard. FYP is for first-year students — they arrive on campus about 10 days ahead of their classmates and spend that time intensively learning about some aspect of Sewanee life. Dr. Gatta’s group is concentrating on the Sewanee environs with a focus on literature. He was kind enough to invite me to join his group because the Sewanee Herbarium recently published my book Fiery Gizzard, Voices from the Wilderness (which, by the way, is available through the University Bookstore or online through amazon.com).
The students were great fun to be with and very gracious in their comments about the book. Most of all, though, I think they really enjoyed their time in Fiery Gizzard. I hope they come back often on their own!
