Hearts a-Bustin’!

… with love, pride, happiness — you name it! Today’s a red-letter day around here. Not only is it Mother’s Day, but today’s Graduation Day at Sewanee! Beautiful day — made even nicer by the sight of this little native plant, Euonymus americanus, one of whose common names really is Hearts a-Bustin’. The plant gets that name, not from these modest flowers but from the gorgeous red fruit, a capsule that indeed does look somewhat like a heart a-bustin’ with love. You may know it by another common name, American Strawberry Bush.   hearts s-bustin'2
