Lunchtime!

These native milkweeds, Asclepius syriaca, are just about to bloom. When they do, they’ll attract all kinds of pollinators to sip sweet nectar, including migrating monarch butterflies looking for a place to lay their eggs as well as a nectar source. But look who’s already  chowing down: a slew of ladybugs devouring thousands of aphids that in turn are sipping not nectar but cell sap — a whole food chain right before our eyes. Now if we only had some crows to eat the ladybugs, maybe we could find an outspoken politician to eat crow.
