Herbarium nature journaler Latham Davis treated the group to a fabulous specimen from his yard last week — a twig of big leaf magnolia, Magnolia macrophylla. The flower, shown here, was just past bloom, but still elegant. The blooms don’t last long, but their copious amounts of pollen are a boon to beetles and other pollinators. We have a very few big leaf magnolias in our campus forest. One very nice specimen grows in the Abbott Cotten Martin Ravine Garden (Abbo’s Alley) on campus. Nature journaling continues Thursday mornings 9-11 through the summer at Lake Cheston. For more information contact Mary Priestley at email@example.com.
