This plant, known for its medicinal properties, is a beauty as well. “Cohosh” is a term that implies medicinal usages. There are many plants with so-called medicinal properties, many of them from folk medicines. Blue cohosh, Caulophyllum thalictroides, is an example. But black cohosh, Actaea racemosa, contains compounds (Cimigenol and Formononiten) proven to relieve menopausal symptoms. Black cohosh is a member of the Buttercup Family, many members of which contain strong chemicals and have been used as medicinals. Take care, though! One man’s poison is another man’s — or woman’s — cure, and vice-versa!
The Visitors’ Center at South Cumberland State Park has a beautiful native plant garden out front. While there to see the flowers, you might take note of the beautiful hawk that has found a home there, too!
